Self-Improvement Fatigue?

We talked about boredom on a recent podcast, and it reminded me of something I think we all suffer from at some point. In this line of work, we are constantly reminded that we can always do better, we can always be better, and we can continuously work on ourselves to get there. At times, it can get a bit overwhelming…and dare I say, annoying. There are a zillion coaches out there, tons of self-help “gurus” and an endless supply of books touting “change yourself” in 500 pages. I’d like to call it “self-improvement fatigue.” I’ve realized that when I start to feel like there can’t possibly be ONE MORE THING someone comes up with, I think what I really need is some motivation and inspiration.

Teresa had the pleasure of interviewing Carley Hauck on the podcast; she was such a kind and genuine soul - and her book “Shine: Ignite Your Inner Game to Lead Consciously at Work and in the World” stuck with both of us to this day. It is a comprehensive guide for personal and professional transformation. I love that she recognizes that we aren’t two separate people - a professional person and a private person. They are symbiotic and each part tangles with the other. Hauck, a leadership coach and consultant, presents a holistic approach to leadership, emphasizing the importance of inner development as the foundation for effective leadership. The book is rooted in the idea that true leadership begins from within, and only by cultivating our internal strengths can we positively influence the external world.

Throughout the book, Hauck integrates mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and conscious leadership principles to create a roadmap for anyone seeking to lead with authenticity, compassion, and purpose. She explores the inner qualities necessary for conscious leadership. These qualities, which she calls the "inner game," include self-awareness, emotional intelligence, resilience, and a growth mindset. Hauck argues that cultivating these qualities is essential not only for personal well-being but also for effective leadership.

Self-Awareness is the foundation of the inner game. Hauck argues that to lead others effectively, we must first understand ourselves—our values, motivations, strengths, and weaknesses. Self-awareness allows us to align our actions with our values, leading to greater authenticity and integrity in our leadership. Hauck provides practical exercises for developing self-awareness, such as journaling, meditation, and mindfulness practices.

Building on the foundation of self-awareness, Hauck discusses the importance of emotional intelligence (EQ) in leadership. EQ involves the ability to recognize, understand, and manage our own emotions, as well as the emotions of others. Hauck explains that leaders with high EQ are better equipped to navigate complex social dynamics, build strong relationships, and create a positive work environment. She offers strategies for enhancing EQ, including active listening, empathy, and self-regulation techniques.

She also highlights the importance of resilience in leadership. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks, adapt to change, and maintain a positive outlook in the face of adversity. In today's fast-paced and unpredictable world, resilience is a critical skill for leaders. Hauck provides tools for building resilience, such as developing a growth mindset, practicing gratitude, and cultivating a support network.

The importance of a growth mindset is also central to the book, as is authenticity and integrity. Leaders with a growth mindset are more open to feedback, more willing to take risks, and more likely to view challenges as opportunities for growth. Likewise, leaders who are authentic and act with integrity are more likely to inspire trust and loyalty in their followers. She provides practical advice for cultivating authenticity and integrity, such as clarifying our values, setting boundaries, and making decisions that align with our principles.

Once you understand how the principles of the inner game work, you can apply those same principles to leadership in the workplace and broader social contexts. She explores how conscious leadership can transform organizations, create positive social impact, and contribute to a more just and sustainable world.

Conscious leadership is a style of leadership that is grounded in self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and a commitment to positive social impact. Conscious leaders are not only focused on achieving business goals but also on creating a positive and inclusive work environment, fostering the well-being of their employees, and contributing to the greater good. Some examples of conscious leaders who have successfully integrated these principles into their leadership practices include Patagonia's CEO, Yvon Chouinard, and Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella.

Hauck emphasizes the importance of building inclusive cultures in the workplace. An inclusive culture is one where all employees feel valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives and talents. Hauck argues that diversity and inclusion are not only moral imperatives but also business imperatives, as they lead to greater innovation, creativity, and employee engagement. She offers strategies for building inclusive cultures, such as promoting diversity in hiring, creating opportunities for employee voice and participation, and fostering a sense of belonging among all employees.

One area that is no stranger to you is her principle of creating positive social impact. Not all leaders have such an obvious social impact, but it’s important for you to remind yourself of just that. You ARE making a difference.

Carley Hauck's Shine is a powerful guide for anyone seeking to develop their inner strengths and lead with consciousness and integrity. By focusing on the inner game—self-awareness, emotional intelligence, resilience, and authenticity—the book provides a roadmap for personal transformation that can lead to more effective and impactful leadership. In a world that increasingly demands conscious leadership, Shine offers invaluable insights and practical tools for creating positive change in the workplace and beyond.

I truly think this book can make a huge impact on you and your leadership success, and ultimately, your happiness. Whether you are a seasoned leader or just starting your leadership journey, Shine provides the guidance and inspiration you need to lead with purpose, compassion, and impact. By applying the principles outlined in the book, you can ignite your inner game, foster a positive work culture, and contribute to a more just and sustainable world.
